Effects of post-wildfire resprouting on forest structure to inform future fuels management

Lisa Bentley

In this project Lisa and Dawson will analyze existing laser scans of California bay laurel trees with basal resprouts across two study sites in Northern California to examine their size post-fire and the relationship of size to fire severity. These results will be crucial to help predict the effects of future wildfire on the surface and ladder fuel loads of areas with California bay laurel trees.

Metabolic Costs and Immune System Impacts from Chronic Cortisol Elevation and Decreased Energy Acquisition

Daniel Crocker

The objective of this proposed effort is to determine the metabolic and immune system costs to chronic stress in the bottlenose dolphin. To this end, metabolic hormones and immune function markers are to be measured in concert with experimental manipulations of circulating cortisol and metabolic rate measurements. Dr. Daniel Crocker will provide the laboratory facilities to be used for most hormone and immune system marker. Dr. Crocker will also oversee the laboratory analyses and participate in data analyses and manuscript preparation.

Collaborating with Sonoma County Civil Air Patrol to Enhance STEM Pipeline

Nansong Wu

This project is a collaborative initiative focused on strengthening the STEM pipeline in our community by partnering with the Sonoma County Civil Air Patrol (CAP) to engage K-12 students in aerospace education and hands-on activities. By leveraging CAP's Aerospace Education Program, which covers a wide array of aerospace topics, the initiative aims to spark curiosity and enthusiasm for STEM subjects among students. The implementation plan emphasizes the use of project-based learning (PBL) and other active learning techniques to enhance student learning outcomes.

Scaling an Innovated STEM and Computing Education Support (STEMACES) Model for Improved Science Learning

Laura Peticolas

This project will meet the needs of rural, high-poverty, and emergent-bilingual Spanish-English communities to increase student achievement in science by scaling a moderate-evidence-based, three-component model. The components are i) three units of hands-on, injury, and standards-based STEM curriculum, ii) evidence-based Professional Development (PD), and iii) sustainable teacher support.

Implementation of the SB 343 Research Project

Robert Eyler

The project is meant to provide an economic model that provides an estimate of what earnings capacity individuals have based on their current or most recent job, the evolution of worker gains in each of the 58 counties, and the wage forecast looking toward 2030. The core outcome of this project is to provide an algorithm that connects the local labor market in California’s counties and regions to determine how someone that needs to pay child support may be able to pay it in the current market and also looking forward over the next five years.
