TRIO PRIORITY 6 23-25

PI: Rayna Penning
School or Division: Student Affairs
Sponsor: Department of Education
Calendar Start & End Date: -
Funding Amount: $686,318

This project entails training 172 new directors annually from all TRIO programs. The training provides a variety of professional development opportunities focusing on general project management, specifically compliance with the statutory regulations, reporting student and project performance, evaluation, record keeping, budget management, participant retention, assisting students in receiving financial aid, postsecondary admissions, developing financial and economic literacy in students, recruiting and serving hard-to-reach participants, improving institutional relations, and new management and student learning technologies. TRIO Training grants assist in gaining national exposure for SSU and its academic programs. A majority of the participants in these grants function as high school and community college counselors to hundreds of thousands of low-income, first-generation students who are trained to become successful college students. Many of these students have full-ride scholarships and are using these professionals to determine where to attend college. This brings the potential for highly diverse out of state recruitment that would otherwise not exist. These programs also bring the name of Sonoma State University to the forefront within the U.S. Department of Education and are known for high quality training programs that have lasted over ten years.
