Abstract:
Patrick Andersen Women Empowerment Through Athletics, 2020 Photo Collage Women’s sports throughout history have been underappreciated and undervalued. In the 1970’s however, many advancements were made to give women more equal treatment in athletics and allowed them to feel more included in the overall world of sports. The passing of Title IX was a huge reason for this progress as it allowed for women to receive equal athletic treatment at all academic institutions. The overall positive progress made in the 70’s for women’s sports was outstanding but it’s important to note that even in today’s society, women’s sports are still undervalued both in public perception and overall treatment. This piece showcases a variety of photographs in the 1970’s of women’s athletes practicing their craft. These images showcase both the progress made in women’s sports due to the positive trends in society at this time as well as the things that still needed to be addressed so that women could feel equal in the most complete way possible. They also show the passion and effort that women put into athletics and show how talented many of them were at their respective sports.
