This is a journal entry that I have composed inspired by Margret Atwood’s The Handmaid's Tale. I wrote this journal as a personal narrative from the perspective of Offred’s daughter (myself). In this narrative she grapples with the realities of growing up with a mother whom she sees as failed feminist. I used this as an opportunity to attempt to emulate Atwood’s style or writing in short lyrical prose. In this journal I explore significant historical moments for women during the 1980’s that Offred’s character would have experienced, and how this could have affected her daughter in the long run. My character was inspired by my own struggles as a female growing up in a patriarchal society, as well as my relationship with my own mother. This narrative is completely fictional but built with support from historical elements and personal experience. This work is a fictionalized commentary on the oppression and sexism that women have faced throughout history and continue to deal with today. Inspired by Atwood, my goal with this journal was to share with you a cautionary tale surrounding the very real experience of women in our society throughout history.
