Abstract:
Entities, such as the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), promote the idea that firms can be pressured by investors to increase their disclosures about emissions. However, because of the difficulty in evaluating disclosures over time researchers have not examined the success of these investor-led efforts. This research project examines whether the largest investor-owned firms have increased their climate-related disclosures from 2010 through 2017. The initial results show that the percent of firms disclosing has not increased: fewer than 50% of the largest investor-owned firms disclosed climate-related information.
