Abstract:
Surf and Turf is usually related to food, the mix of meat and sea food, land and sea. My artpiece has a similar vibe. My artwork is based off of the pop art style in the 1970s. I used bright colors and a cartoon style to convey this style of art. The theme I've related to this piece is skating and surfing (hence the surf and turf). Ive decided to paint an underwater surfer theme on the back of a skateboard, combined with the cartoon style of popart, since all these things had their own relevance in the 1970s.
My Piece is portraying the skating/ surfing community of the 1970s through popart. The skateboard is shaped like a surfboard with a painting of a cartoon shark with a safety tube on the back. The "surfboard" also has a bite mark on the side of it. Ive decided to give the board this look because I not only wanted to show a cartoon style, but also wanted to give it a danger aspect that both surfing and skating can allude. This piece gives off a hint of irony due to the illusion of it looking like a surfboard, but actually being a skateboard. Skateboarding became very popular in the mid 1970s when a huge drought struck, thus people left the seas and took on the concrete waves during this time period. My artpiece portrays leaving the seas and skateboarding instead, while also leaving room for artstic style that blew up in the 1970s as well.
