Abstract:

Sulfur-containing molecules have previously been shown to have beneficial effects in a variety of organisms, however the exact mechanism by which they function remains a mystery. Here we show that sulfur-containing molecules can protect bacteria from toxins that normally kill them.  This protective effect may also give insight as to how bacteria avoid the immune response during an infection. It is the hope that the work presented here will lead to better therapies or drugs aimed at preventing bacterial infections.
