Abstract:

This study was designed to determine any impact on students when given the opportunity to read silently during class.  Working with a small group (n=6) of freshmen high school students who had been identified as needing support with their reading abilities, the curriculum was designed to incorporate a consistent period (25 minutes) of silent reading along with an opportunity to respond to their reading in writing and then participate in a broader class discussion. Students were asked in pre- and post- surveys about their feelings or attitudes towards reading.  Scores were taken to determine any change in reading abilities.  Students were also interviewed towards the end of the class about the class and what they thought about it.
