Abstract:
This project was inspired by the 1970's environmental movement. The first Earth day and the Environmental Protection Agency were both created in 1970. 1970 was a decade toward recovery and restoring the devastating damage done to the environment after the War. After this research, a song that specially stuck out was "Don't Go Near the Water" by the Beach Boys. This song was very impactful on the album "Surfs up" because the Beach Boys were known to sing about fun in the sun, however the first song on the album conveyed a strong message with lyrics that were different from their usual style. They sang about the damage that people have done to the water and that it was threatening life on land as well. It was a call to action. I created a video which included a painting, pictures and short clips. The painting illustrated what the plastic and trash in the ocean does to marine life with a voice over of facts people may not know. The pictures showed things we can do in our everyday life to help the problem. Lastly, the short videos helped illustrate the beauty of the ocean and ocean life. I wanted something to portray not only the movement but also represent the strong meaning of the song. This project was meaningful to me because I grew up with the beach as a second home. Beach clean ups have been something I participated in frequently since high school. All of the pictures, paintings and short clips added were created/captured by me however the music in the background is cited below.
