Abstract:
My art project is about many concepts including Women's rights, Women's music, and Women's fashion in the 1970's. My idea for this was to show the many images that surround everything about women in the 1970's and how they impacted the world during that era. My title "Roe with Women" is a play on words with women and on the court case in 1973 "Roe vs Wade", which was women's liberty to abortions. It was an important event for all women across the world in their victory that advocated and pushed further for their rights movement. As shown, I started with the background as magazine cutouts to illustrate the many articles and newspaper headlines in the 1970's about women that were made to either bring women down or show gratitude towards their protesting for rights. The next layer is picture collages of all three of my key concepts. Many of the pictures are women that were musicians in the 1970's. I included women like Joni Mitchell, Pati Smith, Janis Joplin, Donna Summer, and Carole King. I meant to also include Aretha Franklin These famous women represent the uprising of women in the music industry during that time. Next, I included a picture that has 3 african american women showing off their outfits, which represents women's fashion. I went for that picture because I thought it was a fun representation that included the popular fashion trends during that era like bell bottoms, platform shoes, and afros. Then, the two photos in the middle are to represent the women's rights movement. In the 1970's, the women's rights movement was the diverse liberation movement that advocated for equal rights, equal opportunity, and greater personal freedom. The picture on the right was to exemplify how women were treated which coincides with the rights movement. Lastly, I painted a big picture of a woman with an afro to represent what my original project was going to be about; African American women. I felt that African American women were a huge part in the women's rights movement and a big part of changing the world with their music. It was the era where they took a stand and demanded for their rights, freedom, and acceptance to the world.
