Abstract:
This study demonstrates the use of arts-based environmental education (ABEE) practices as a model for interdisciplinary outdoor learning in a schoolyard bird habitat garden. Fourth grade students will create field sketches, based on their observations of plants and animals in the garden. The sketches will be developed into visual narratives through techniques such as cartooning, painting, and stop motion animation and will be presented to the wider school community on a website linked to signage in the garden. The study will use a participatory action research methodology to demonstrate ways to facilitate a creative dialogue between children and nature.
