Abstract:
“Preppers” are a growing sub-culture of people who prepare for disasters ranging from minor weather events, to “The End of the World as We Know It.” This book project asks, what accounts for the rise of prepping in American culture in the early 21st century? What is the relationship between prepping and public response to climate change? In Prepared: The Environmental Politics of the End of the World, I explore the tension between public uncertainty about climate change, widespread public distrust in institutions, and awareness of socio-environmental risk that pervades contemporary American life.
