Abstract:
Background: Post-Licensure Bachelor of Science Nursing (BSN) programs build on previous learning from pre-licensure nursing programs, usually Associate Nursing (ADN) program, including Palliative Care (PC). Aim: Understand PC competencies ADN students bring to Post-Licensure BSN program; identify gaps. Method: ADN curricula reviewed, informal interviews with ADN faculty. 2 cohorts (2018, 2019) ADNs admitted to Post-Licensure BSN were surveyed for Knowledge, Skills, and Attitude. Results: Survey response rate 42% & 49%. Students reported confidence in practical application of palliative care, or a good understanding of theoretical concepts. 1student had no knowledge in 1 topic: State and federal legal guidelines. In ADN curricula, 3 of 4 programs identified palliative care in some form, varied in content placement. Conclusion: Success: Self-reflection; Respect for ethical, cultural, spiritual diversity; Patient-Centered care. Gaps identified in alignment with expected content areas.
