Acrylic Painting on Vinyl Records

Abstract:

The idea of the project was to find a way to link past music to today. I have seen trends where people create artwork of what a screenshot of an album looks like on your phone, but onto glass. They use this glass piece to decorate walls. I wanted to do a similar thing but connect it to 1980s music. During quarantine I decided to take on painting in an attempt to destress and find an outlet for my anxieties at the time.  What I did was paint popular album covers from the 1980s onto vinyl records I bought at goodwill. I was fortunate to have access to albums my mother had saved from growing up in the 1980s and recreate albums that were important to her. The albums my mother had were Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the USA, Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and Duran Duran’s Rio. Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, and Duran Duran all released popular albums in the 1980s; Social media have used music to create decor for various spaces; I decided to combine the two and paint these popular albums onto vinyls. I enjoyed this project a lot because it allowed me to connect activities that I like to do with what I am learning in school. It was also cool to connect what I am learning about the 1980s with what my mom experienced at the time.
