Abstract:
This project critically examines some of the mainstream critical responses to Spike Lee's landmark 1989 film, Do the Right Thing, These responses are contextualized and discussed with reference both to the contemporary political climate and to postcolonial theory. In the process, this project examines how and why mainstream critics responded to the film in the manner they did and analyzes such responses' underlying presumptions regarding the film's implied viewers.
