Abstract:
For my creative research project, I recorded a podcast with my mom as a co-host to gain perspective on the emergence of AIDS and how it impacted the United States in the 1980s.  Coming up with a name for the podcast was one of the harder parts, believe it or not. I wanted the podcast to fall under a generic category, and I decided to make the topic of that specific episode the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s. Since it’s supposed to be a “mom and daughter” type of podcast I wanted to play around with those words somehow...so, the name of the podcast came to be “The Daughteraholic Podcast”. Mentors and resources I used throughout this project spanned from YouTube videos, to articles, my mom, and even through my experience doing KSUN, the radio/podcasting class at SSU.  YouTube videos helped me decide how to edit my podcast to make it sound more interesting and professional. The YouTube channel Modern Vintage Radio helped me to structure a casual, yet informative, conversation and truly find a way to hook my audience. Erin May Henry, another YouTuber, helped me figure out how to plan, organize, and then implement my ideas into my podcast. Another content creator and YouTuber, Natalie Barbu, exposes how to start and maintain a podcast. Next, I used multiple articles to do my research and become familiar with the AIDS epidemic in the 80s These articles also helped me to analyze and develop questions regarding my research and how to interview someone properly. My mom of course was the main mentor for me in this project because she gave me the most information through her own personal experiences with the AIDS epidemic. In terms of planning the project, I picked some comedic intro and outro music to provide a fun and bubbly tone for the podcast. I also chose some ambient background music so it wasn’t solely our voices. I learned this in my radio class, KSUN. My past knowledge from KSUN also aided me when doing the transcript portion of this project. For recording and editing, I attempted to use GarageBand at first on my Mac, but I quickly found myself confused and unfamiliar with the app. So, I used Voice Memos on my phone, and was able to record and edit my podcast successfully.
