Abstract:
The central idea of our project is to compare and contrast dance styles in popular music videos from the 1980s versus the current time period of 2019/2020. We wanted to create a video where we can find all of the styles in one video so they are easy to compare. Our project incorporates three different songs that were popular in the 1980s music industry. These songs include “Thriller” a short film, “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” a pop song, and also “Rhythm Nation” which is of the genre contemporary RnB. We also chose the songs “ME!” which is bubblegum pop and “Juice” which is funk and pop. These songs represent music videos from the current era.

We were inspired to make this video because of our past and present with dance and videos. When we were younger, dance competitions would always show dance compilations videos of featured dancers for Jenna, and for Lauren, a master teacher who was on tour as a backup dancer for Michael Jackson shared stories of his time with the class. Popular YouTubers that we watch now, such as “Kara and Nate” always talk about editing their videos. Our families also had an impact on our editing skills as they are editors themselves. So we edited a bunch of popular videos in the 80s and now in a dance compilation video.
