The State Office of Historic Preservation has designated the Northwest Information Center (NWIC) as one of seven Information Centers located throughout the state. Valley Water manages 333 miles of waterways of creeks in Santa Clara County. Valley Water also partners with cities and the county to provide open space and recreational opportunities at many of its ten reservoirs and along creeks throughout the county. Since 2000, public access to more than 70 miles of new creekside trails has been made available in the county. This agreement delivers cultural resource data in digital packages on a semi-annual schedule over a three-year period to Valley Water, as well as allowing qualified Valley Water staffas ad-hoc or on-call service needs. The cultural resources manager at Valley Water will use this data to identify, evaluate, and protect cultural resources that may be impacted during Valley Water projects. Funding received through this agreement will supplement core missions of the NWIC by providing employment and training opportunities to SSU students (both undergraduate and graduate) in the field of cultural resources management and exposure to the leading edge information management technologies used by the NWIC to manage the inventory in our service area. In addition to employment opportunities, funding from this agreement supports internships and educational assistance for local governments, tribal partners, and members of the public regarding the value of cultural resources and the various state or federal laws that seek to protect them.
