Galbreath Prescribed Burn Demonstration Site and Public Trainings

PI: Claudia Luke
School or Division: Academic Affairs
Sponsor: Mendocino County Fire Safe Council
Calendar Start & End Date: -
Funding Amount: $7,535

This project sets the stage to establish the Galbreath Wildlands Preserve as a prescribed burn demonstration site for fuel reduction, ecological and cultural objectives. Through on-going public events, the site will give community members first-hand experience comparing these approaches, and gaining the knowledge and skills needed by the community to re-introduce prescribed fire as a land management tool in southern Mendocino County. The Center for Environmental Inquiry (CEI) will work with the Yorkville Fire Safe Council, Anderson Valley Fire Department, Mendocino County Prescribed Burn Association, and prescribed fire experts to undertake prescribed burn planning and public trainings. We will (1) prepare prescribed burn plans, smoke management plans, permits (local and university) for three prescribed burns: fuel reduction, ecological and cultural; and (2) host three public events focusing on building knowledge and skills.
