This lightning talk draws from sections of a book, Governing Climate: How Science and Politics Have Shaped Our Environmental Future (University of California Press, 2024). The final stages of completion of the book were supported by an RSCAP award in summer 2024. This talk relates the history of climate science and politics (the focus of the book) to current political and intellectual debates regarding the impact of global warming on weather events and environmental disasters.
