The composition of California’s population has been changing over time and is projected to change further in upcoming decades. Trends such as decreasing birth rates, increasing life spans, and the cost of housing affecting migration rates all affect the “components of population change.” In this project, we utilized sources such as ESRI Business Analyst, the U.S. Census Bureau, and California Department of Finance data to explore California’s demographic makeup and how it is projected to change over time. We looked at four regions around the state: Bay Area, South Coast, Inland Empire, and Central Valley Metros. Characteristics we explore include the population of kids and teenagers, senior citizens, birth rates, and school enrollment.
